Every Birthday Is a Gift

Last week, I celebrated another trip around the sun, as they say. Birthdays are inevitably times for reflection, on things past and things to come, on priorities and resolutions. This one feels like a particularly big deal because it marks a passage: I’ve reached the final year of my 50s. When is it that the world considers us past our prime? And why does numerical age often feel so disconnected from the way we feel?

I feel incredibly fortunate and grateful to have been given the gift of reaching this milestone: 59. Fifty-nine! I can hardly believe it. Still, if there is one true gift you can receive on a birthday, isn’t it reaching the birthday itself? The gift of another year is priceless.

“…any unhealthy obsession with achieving the "perfect pout," razor sharp jawlines, or "glassy skin" never really helps in terms of happiness.”

I think quite a bit about how what I do at The Skin RN on a daily basis helps patients find their confidence and feel better about their appearance—I love making a difference in patients’ day-to-day happiness, confidence and joy. And though our goal is to achieve top-notch and even transformative results, I nevertheless believe it’s important to approach this stuff with a certain degree of good nature and sobriety: any unhealthy obsession with achieving the "perfect pout," razor sharp jawlines, or "glassy skin" never really helps in terms of happiness.

When we see each other I want you to know that what you look like or what I look like is the most uninteresting thing about us. You all have such amazing things to share about the lives you are living—a big part of that is the inevitable fact that we’re all aging!

“…it was the time to become very intentional about how you want to live and end. Where and who do you really want to be?”

Someone once said that if she had to tell women something when they turned 60, it would be that it is the beginning of their third and final act of life and living. She said it was the time to become very intentional about how you want to live and end. Where and who do you really want to be?

For my part, I want to be confident and full. Of course, part of that is appearance—and I, for one, will not be going down without a fight! 😂 As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I have had every treatment I provide done on myself—we only offer what we believe in. I see an injector I trust annually, my good friend Natalia at Atelier Aesthetix in Beverly Hills. I am a strong proponent of doing all the things that will make you feel confident, radiant, and your most you!

A visit to Natalia’s office last month:

It is always important to remember that our body is simply the container that allows us to experience life. Nobody is going to stand up at a funeral and say they loved you because you were a size 2! Our appearance is important, but it will inevitably be a footnote in our life story. Our character and our impact, though? That's what lives on in people's hearts. I hope I can be mindful of that not only for myself but for all of you, too!

“It is always important to remember that our body is simply the container that allows us to experience life. Nobody is going to stand up at a funeral and say they loved you because you were a size 2!”

Let us be intentional in our aging. When we are 80, let’s look at our thighs and remember how much they loved dancing, and our well-earned smile lines that were etched from years of joy!

Cheers to a happy and fruitful new year!
